Building Strong Foundations in Mathematics (Calvin Spark)
Professor Jan Koop in the Math Department has been awarded a Michigan Department of Education grant of nearly $200,000 to provide professional development to area elementary principals and math teachers.

Educating for Shalom: An International Study of Race, Reconciliation, and Justice in Teacher Education Programs
Dr. Susan Hasseler, Associate Dean for Teacher Education, was on sabbatical leave during the spring semester. She examined the efforts of two institutions with Reformed roots (Calvin College and North-West University in Potchefstroom, South Africa) to design educational programs that prepare teachers to teach in ways that promote equity and justice.

The Center Art Gallery displayed the work of six Art Education students who recently completed their programs.
Beversluis Forum Presented Dr. Peter Prinsen:
"The Partnership between Christian and Public Schools in Canada"

The Calvin community enjoyed a lecture by Dr. Peter Prinsen on February 15, 2006. Dr. Prinsen has worked to promote Christian schooling as a viable alternative to public school programs and has come to believe that a partnership between public and Christian schools is a fulfillment of some of the ideas of Abraham Kuyper.

New Education Faculty
We welcomed three new faculty members to the Education Department in September, 2005: Dr. Albert Boerema, Dr. KaiLonnie Dunsmore,
and Dr. Rachel Reed.

Dr. Albert Boerema
Assistant Professor of Education

A graduate of Trinity Christian College and a Christian high school principal from British Columbia, Dr. Boerema finished a doctoral program in school leadership, policy and organization at Vanderbilt University. He is teaching EDUC 102 and he is also assisting with the Educational Leadership M.Ed. Program.

 

Dr. KaiLonnie Dunsmore
Assistant Professor of Education

Dr. Dunsmore earned a Ph.D. degree in teacher education and literacy from Michigan State University. Her areas of expertise include attention to the development of instructional environments that support the literacy development of at-risk learners, especially those in special education populations. She has both elementary and middle school teaching experience, and prior to coming to Calvin, taught at the graduate level in programs in the U.S. as well as in Thailand.

Most recently, Dr. Dunsmore has been involved in intervention research that addresses reading difficulties among disadvantaged populations in early elementary school. Her work in family literacy involves attention to the ways in which mainstream teachers can learn how support parent literacy engagement when teaching in highly diverse contexts and working with populations whose cultural exeriences differ from their own. She has published several works in these areas.

 

Dr. Rachel Reed
Assistant Professor of Education

Dr. Reed earned a degree in biology from Aquinas College and her initial teaching certificate from Calvin College, after which she taught middle-school and high-school science for six years and coordinated a formal gifted program for high school students. She holds two Master's degrees: one in Secondary and Adult Science Education and a second in Chemical Oceanography. She did the bulk of her graduate work, including her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology, at the University of Connecticut.

She has published articles in astrobiogeochemistry, science education, and gifted and talented education - particularly, on the subject of socially-constructive giftedness. She conducted research on microbial mats in Puerto Rico and New England as a member of NASA's Astrobiology institute and worked with NOAA and the National Undersea Research Center on projects investigating the effectiveness of collaboration between marine research and science education. Dr. Reed was a Research Associate with The National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented for several years.

Professor Robert Keeley and wife Laura have published their 3rd Christmas play for children. Not Forgotten is available at the Calvin bookstore or from Faith Alive Christian Resources.
