Special Education

The Special Education Certificate qualifies the holder to teach:

  • Grades K-5, all subjects
  • Grades 6-8, all subjects, self-contained classroom
  • Grades K-12, Cognitive Impairment

Calvin also offers a graduate program leading to the K-12 Learning Disabilities endorsement.

Candidates who are certified with K-12 Cognitive Impairment or Learning Disabilities may need to meet additional requirements in order to teach core academic subjects in grades 6-12 in Michigan.

Student Teaching

The Special Education Program requires two student teaching placements—one semester in a regular K–5 classroom and a second semester in a special education setting.
