Employment Opportunities for Calvin Students

The Ecosystem Preserve department employs a number of Calvin College students throughout the year in a variety of positions. As an employee of the Ecosystem Preserve, you will gain valuable experience and skills that will prepare you for your future career in variety of fields study including but not limited to environmental science, education, environmental education, interpretation, biology, recreation, and non profit work.

Positions include:

Educational Program Leaders (Academic School Year) - teach environmental education programs to visiting elementary and middle school students who visit the Ecosystem Preserve during the fall, winter, and spring. Eight to ten Program Leaders positions are available for 2011-2012 academic year. If interested please first read the job description and more about the position. Preserve Stewards (Academic School Year) - assist the director and manager with the day to day onsite management of the Ecosystem Preserve by walking the trails to observe and record visitor usage, trail maintenance needs, and wildlife observed. They also assist with light maintenance needs such as litter pick up, weed removal, and raking. Open to sophomore level and above biology or environmental studies majors. Program Assistants (Academic School Year) - assist the program manager and director in developing and executing programs for the Bunker Interpretive Center and the Ecosystem Preserve. Several openings are available the 2011-2012 academic year. To learn more about this position read the job description. Stewardship Interns (Academic School Year) - engage in a variety of tasks (plant propagation, restoration plantings, landscape maintenance, etc.) to allow Calvin College to pursue active stewardship of lands within the boundaries of the Ecosystem Preserve. Open to junior and senior level students majoring in biology or environmental studies. If interested in this position speak with Professor Randy Van Dragt .

Summer Camp Leaders (Summer, 10 to 12 weeks) - prepare for, teach, and supervise summer camp programs for pre-school and elementary children in an outdoor setting. If interested in these positions speak with Jeanette Henderson. Applications are accepted for these positions starting in January with a decision made before spring break.

Summer Preserve Stewards (Summer, 12 weeks)- work on a variety of on going research projects including mammal, bird, and trees surveys and assist with removal of invasive species, general trail maintenance, creation of new trails, native plantings etc. Two to three positions are available each summer.
