Get Involved

Both community volunteers and Calvin students are an integral part of the beauty, preservation, education and great programs happening at the Ecosystem Preserve.

Volunteering for the Preserve

Adult Volunteers

You don't have to be a student or faculty member at Calvin College to get involved with activities at the Preserve. In fact, we are blessed with many volunteers from the Grand Rapids area, who assist us with anything from maintenance on the trails to reading to campers at summer camp. Our volunteers will find a welcoming, supportive, and appreciative environment here. Would you like to work in the peace of the Preserve, or do you prefer to work with a group of curious children? Would you like to help out for a day, or prefer to contribute year-round? Do you want to get exercise, or do you want to get creative? Whatever your interests are, we do our best to find ways for you to share your talents on your schedule. Find out more.

Youth Volunteers

New for Summer 2013, we are offering a rewarding experience for youths between the ages of 12 and 17. Our new Junior Volunteer Crew will be busy caring for the Preserve and assisting with younger campers this summer. It's a great way for teens to be a part of the exciting things taking place at the Preserve, get outside, have fun and learn about nature at the same time, or even fulfill community service hours or class credits. Student Employment

We employ students to work in a variety of positions both during the academic school year and in the summer. As an employee of the Ecosystem Preserve, you will gain valuable experience and develop skills that will prepare you for your future career in a variety of fields, including: environmental science, education, environmental education, interpretation, biology, recreation, and non profit work. Meet a Volunteer

Sharron Bajema

Sharon Bajema, Program Leader, 2006 to present

Sharon’s favorite place on the preserve is Whiskey Pond, because of the floating dock and diversity of the plants and animals around it. When asked about her favorite part of coming here, she replied, “Interacting with others and sharing my experiences with them. I also like the quiet trails and enjoying the beauty of God’s creation… I usually learn or experience something new each time I lead a tour group.”
