Dutch International Society Scholarship
The Dutch International Society (DIS) is an organization created in the city of Grand Rapids, MI, by immigrants from the Netherlands. Its original name was the Dutch Immigrant Society. Grand Rapids is its home base. At the same time DIS is also an international society. It shares many elements of its background, religious beliefs and priorities with Calvin College, which was founded in 1876, also by Dutch immigrants, but which now attracts students and faculty from all over the USA, Canada and many foreign countries. The language and culture of the Netherlands has been consistently taught, studied and highlighted throughout Calvin's history today as much as ever. In 2009, the Dutch language program at Calvin had over 40 students. The college also offers interim courses in the Netherlands and is beginning a semester-long program there.
Recognizing these shared interests and priorities, the Dutch International Society is contributing a significant portion of its endowment to support Dutch language studies at Calvin College. Candidates are prospective or current Calvin students who are taking (or planning to take) classes in the Dutch Language Program. Requirements are a GPA of 2.70 or higher and financial need.
To apply, contact the Dutch Language Program. Students who wish to be considered for renewal must file a new application each year and will be given equal consideration with other candidates.
Four scholarships ranging from $1,500 to $2,500 were awarded for 2010-2011.
