Study and discussion of several Dutch literary texts representative of the classical and modern periods of Dutch literature. Because the literature studied is varied form year to year, the course may be repeated for credit. This course is conducted in Dutch. Staff.

A continuation of 305. Staff.

309 Netherlandic Civilization (3) *S.
A study conducted in the English language of several important aspects of Netherlandic civilization: literature, history, religion, art, architecture, social structure, and education.

Study in the Netherlands

Interim: Dutch Landscape: Society,Technology, and Environment
If you are interested in studying in the Netherlands over the Interim term, please contact H. Aay (526-7033) in the Geology, Geography, and Environmental Science Department or R. Hoeksema (526-6167) in the Engineering Department or visit the course web page.

Course Description: Students will see dwelling mounds over a thousand years old, windmills used to drain lakes over 300 years old, modern pumping facilities used to keep newly reclaimed land dry, modern windmills used to generate electricity and modern water treatment facilities. On the Delta plan excursion we will see some of the most advanced truly impressive engineering works ever built to protect the environment of the low lands from storms. Three open weekends (each three days long) allow personal travel to places of interest in Netherlands or elsewhere in Europe. This course if approved for CCE credit.

Calvin College students may apply to the study abroad programs of Central College (Iowa) or Netherlandic Spice — Dordt College (Iowa). Calvin College students receiving financial aid at Calvin may apply that aid toward these other intuition's programs:

Netherlandic S.P.I.C.E. Dordt College
Study in Zwolle. Program endorsed by the Christian Coalition of Colleges.

James Boswell Institute
For students wishing to enroll in an intensive language study program, the James Boswell Institute (JBI) of the Universiteit Utrecht is recommended. JBI offers intensive courses (12 hours per week) at all levels. Since Calvin College has no official exchange program with JBI, course credit for Calvin College must be worked out with Prof. De Vries on an individual basis.
