Academics: Ministry Leadership Minor


REQUIREMENTS FOR MINOR (20-21 semester hours)

1.CMS 151—Church and Society (3 hours), or approved interim

2. One additional 200 level Religion course beyond core, in Bible or Theology(3 hours). If students have taken Biblical Foundations II as their second Religion core course, then they should take one course from REL 230-235 to fulfill this requirement. If students have taken Theological Foundations II as their second Religion core course, then they should take one course from 211-224 to fulfill this requirement.

3. Cluster of courses related to area of emphasis (8-9 hours): For students emphasizing

  • Community development: CMS 375, REL 295,  and either SOC 302 or  IDS 355 (9 hours)
  • Congregational studies: SOC 311, SOC 303, and either  SOC 302 or REL 379 (9 hours)
  • Missions: REL 252, SOC 303, and one course from the following:  REL 255, REL 251, REL 352, REL 353, REL 354, REL 355, or REL 356 (9 hours)
  • Music in worship: REL 237, MUSC 236, and three credit hours from MUSC 131, 182, and/or 221 (9 hours)
  • Pastoral ministry: three sections of CMS 251, CMS 378 or REL 237, one from the following SOC 250, CAS 253, or CAS 260 (9 hours)
  • Worship: REL 237, MUSC 236, and one from the following: ART 232, ART 233, or REL 379 (9 hours)
  • Youth ministry: CMS 374, EDU 309, PSYCH 202 (8 hours)

4. One course from a complementary area of interest (3 hours) from:

Students will choose a course they did not count toward the requirements listed in number 3, from the following:

  • CMS 251--Theological Reflections on Ministry Practices (1), which may be taken up to three times
  • CMS 374—Youth and Family Ministry
  • CMS 378—A Christian Calling: Proclaiming Jubilee as a Christian Leader
  • CMS 375 —Ministry, Leadership, and Community Development
  • REL 237—Worship
  • REL 252—Missions
  • MUSC 236 -- Music in Worship

5. CMS 381 Ministry Studies Internship (3 hours), with specialized placements in the area of student interests/emphasis
