Established by his family and friends in memory of Ernest Van Vugt, former Professor of Latin and Registrar of the college, this scholarship is awarded annually to a student entering the junior or senior year, having a GPA of at least 3.30, and pursuing a Classics major or special interest in the Classics. Candidates for this award will be nominated and selected by the Classics Department. The purpose of the scholarship is to recognize and support advanced students in the classical languages, to encourage recipients to pursue careers in this field, and to celebrate Ernest Van Vugt’s great contribution to classical studies at Calvin. Recipients are selected in March by the faculty of the Classics Department. One scholarship of $1,500 was awarded for 2005-06.

Richard & Sylvia Wevers Scholarship

Established by Richard (Emeritus Professor of Classics) and Sylvia Wevers, this scholarship is awarded annually to a senior student with a GPA of at least 3.3 who is majoring in one of the programs of the Classics Department which entails the study of Greek, who is seriously committed to the Christian ministry in the Christian Reformed Church, and who intends to receive training for that ministry at Calvin Theological Seminary. The purpose of the scholarship is to assist and encourage outstanding pre-seminarians in their study of Greek and to promote the Wevers' convictions that thorough study of the Greek language is indispensable for effective textual study of the Bible, and that such textual studies are essential for doing sound theology.
