The Lesser Propylaea leads into the Precinct of Demeter, an area restricted only to priests and initiates. To the right is the Plutonion, a triangular sanctuary dedicated to Pluto/Hades, built in the 4th century BC. Here is a cavern, sacred to Hades, in which a temple once stood. Stairs and a pit on this spot may have been used in some form to reenact the appearance of Persephone from Hades. From here, the processional road leads to the Telesterion. Plutonion Plutonion
