A lane branches off from the Sacred Way to a small gate. Along this lane
stood the Treasury of Corinth, the oldest and supposedly
richest of the treasuries. The remains of two destroyed treasuries and
the Prytaneion stand opposite.
Built of irregular, perfectly interlocking blocks, the Polygonal
Wall acts as a retaining wall against the terrace of the second temple
of Apollo. The wall is covered with over 800 inscriptions, detailing
public events, trials, and the freeing of slaves.
As the Sacred Way now climbs steeply, the circular pedestal
of the Tripod of Plataia has been re-erected. The bodies of
three bronze snakes supporting a golden tripod once topped this pedestal.
The snakes are now at the Hippodrome in Istanbul. The golden tripod
itself was stolen by the Phokians.
