Towering crags comprise the former Sanctuary of Gethemis, dedicated to the earth goddess Ge. These rocks circle a natural chasm where the first oracle of this site was located. Ge was later replaced by Apollo when he slew her son, the Python, which guarded this site.

Here stands Sibyl's Rock, on which it is believed that the first Sibyl stood when she pronounced the first oracle at Delphi. Next to it stands Leto's Rock, where myth tells that Leto, Apollo's mother, encouraged him to kill the Python.

On the rock behind Leto's Rock, the Naxian Sphinx once stood atop a fluted Ionic column, dedicated circa 570 BC. More information.

A play celebrating Apollo's victory over the Python was performed every eight years at the Halos, or threshing floor, a circular court opposite of Leto's Rock. North of this stood the Stoa of the Athenians, dedicated after the Battle of Salamis in the Persian War.
