The Offering of Marathon was erected after the Athenian's
famed victory at the Battle of Marathon. Thirteen statues, including
Athena, Apollo, General Miltiades, and various other heroes of the
battle. Later, three additional statues were added of the kings Antigonos,
Demetrios Poliorketes, and Ptolemy.
On either side of the road stand the semi-circular exedrae of the
Argive Dedications. To the left stands the monument of the
Epigones, commemorating the descendants of the generals from the first
Argive invasion of Thebes. These Epigoni shared their ancestors success
by launching a second, victorious invasion against Thebes. On the
right, made in 456 BC after the Argive triumph over the Lacedaimonians,
stands the other exedrae, which is dedicated to the original Argive
generals who invaded Thebes. |
