A distance from the Propylaea is the foundation on which a colossal bronze statue of Athena once stood. The statue was finished in 458 BC and its nine meter heigth could be seen by sailers rounding Cape Zoster. The statue held a spear and shield and wore a crested helmet. It was later taken to Constantinople and eventually destroyed in a riot.
