Interim Trip to Japan



Japanese:

JAPN 101 - Elementary Japanese (4 credits): An introduction to the Japanese language and culture, stressing both spoken and written Japanese. Students learn read and write "hiragana", "katakana", and some "kanji", the three sets of symbols used in written Japanese. By the middle of the semester all lessons are written in "real Japanese", namely with "kana" and "kanji". After one semester students will be able to carry on simple conversations in Japanese, read dialogues written in Japanese, and understand some fundamentals of Japanese social values and ways of thinking. There are weekly drills with a native speaker, for conversation practice and help with homework assignments.

JAPN 102 - Elementary Japanese (4 credits): Continuation of 101, a study of Japanese grammar with equal emphasis on improving conversational proficiency and on reading and writing Japanese. Many more "kanji" (Chinese characters) will be introduced for reading and writing and as a medium for gaining insight into Japanese culture. Weekly drill sessions with a native speaker are continued.

JAPN 201 - Intermediate Japanese (4 credits): The goal of this course is to further the student's ability to speak and understand, read and write the Japanese language. Extensive oral drills and reading exercises continue to be used. By the end of the term the student will know approximately 300 "kanji". Weekly conversational drills with a native speaker continue throughout the second year of study.

JAPN 202 - Intermediate Japanese (4 credits): This term completes the study of basic Japanese grammar and syntax. By the end of the term the student will have been introduced to all the basic grammar patterns of Japanese and will have mastered a total of at least 400 "kanji". This semester also marks the completion of the two-year language requirement at Calvin College.

JAPN 215 - Advanced Conversation (4 credits): This course is designed to develop advanced listening comprehension skills as well as advanced competence in spoken Japanese through exercised, drills, and conversation in class. Students will also continue their study of the written language by learning many new "kanji".
Prerequisite: 202 or permission of instructor

JAPN 216 - Advanced Grammar and Composition (4 credits): The systematic study of advanced grammar and composition. Students will learn many new "kanji" as they improve their skills in written Japanese. Conversation practice in spoken Japanese will also be emphasized.

JAPN 217 - Introduction to Modern Japanese Literature: 1868 to the Present (3 credits): A continuation of Japanese language study by reading works of literature in Japanese written by major Japanese authors from 1868, when Japan opened itself to the rest of the world and entered the modern era, to the present. Students will also read selected readings on Japanese society and culture today, as well as view a series of videos about how to get by as a foreigner in Japan, both culturally and linguistically.

JAPN 218 - Business Japanese (3 credits): Students will learn the vocabulary and the customs for doing business in Japan. Textbooks to be used include the two volumes put out by the Nissan Automobile Company, entitled "Business Japanese". There are also readings about Japanese culture from a book called "The Four Seasons of Japan," to help students to continue to improve their reading skills in Japanese.

JAPN Interim trip to Japan (3 credits): A three-week trip to Japan in late May and early June will be offered every four years. The trip carries both interim and CCE credit. The next trip will be in 2010. Each time the trip will cover somewhat different areas in Japan. Students will always have the chance to do at least several homestays with Japanese families, see some of the most famous historic, cultural, and scenic sights in Japan, and experience daily life in the island nation. This trip also gives students the opportunity to improve their Japanese language skills.
