Interim Trip to China
Chinese:
CHIN 101 - Elementary Chinese (4
credits): An introduction to Chinese language and culture, stressing both
spoken and written Chinese. After one semester students will be able to
carry on simple conversations in (Mandarin) Chinese, read dialogues written
in Chinese, and understand some fundamentals of Chinese social values
and ways of thinking. Approximately 300 Chinese "characters"
will be introduced.

CHIN 102 - Elementary Chinese (4 credits):
A continuation of Chinese 101. Continued study of Chinese grammar, with
equal emphasis on improving conversational proficiency and on reading
and writing Chinese. Another 300 Chinese "characters" will be
introduced for reading and writing and as a medium for gaining insight
into Chinese culture.
Prerequisite: 101 or permission of instructor

CHIN 201 - Intermediate Chinese (4
credits): A continuation of Chinese 102. Further study of basic Chinese
grammar and continued study of the Chinese writing system, with equal
emphasis on speaking and reading the language. An additional 300 Chinese
"characters" are introduced. In addition to their textbook,
students also read a short novel based on a famous Chinese folktale, entitled
"The Lady in the Painting", to improve their reading skills
and gain further insight into Chinese tradition.

CHIN 202 - Intermediate Chinese
(4 credits): A continuation of Chinese 201. Completion of the study of
basic Chinese grammar and further study of the Chinese writing system,
with continued emphasis on both speaking and reading. Three hundred more
"characters" are taught, for reading comprehension and cultural
understanding. In addition to their textbook, students also read a book
of famous stories about the supernatural from the 1600's, entitled "Strange
Stories from a Chinese Studio", as well as a book of famous Chinese
jokes, entitled "Laughing in Chinese". These additional readings
are to give the students further reading practice as well as greater insight
into Chinese culture and tradition.

CHIN 215 - Advanced Conversation (4
credits): A study of the finer points of Chinese grammar, with an emphasis
on conversational practice. Students also continue their study of the
written language. In addition to their textbook, students also read 40
of the stories behind some of the most famous sayings or idioms in the
Chinese language. The daily life and social values of Chinese today is
also discussed at length, with the help of an additional textbook of cultural
readings about China today. Three or four hundred addtional "characters"
are learned.

CHIN 216 - Advanced Grammar and Composition
(4 credits): Continued study of the finer points of Chinese grammar, with
an emphasis on expressing oneself in written Chinese. Conversational Chinese
continues to also be stressed, however. Students will learn an additional
three or four hundred "characters", while continuing their readings
in the textbook, as well as in the two addditional books on Chinese idioms
and Chinese culture.

CHIN 217 - Introduction to Modern Chinese Literature: 1911 to the Present (3 credits):
A continuation
of Chinese language study and
an introduction to works written by major
Chinese authors from 1911, when Chinese
literature was first written in the modern
vernacular, to the present, as well as selected
readings on Chinese history, society,
and culture.
Prerequisite: Chinese 216 or
permission of the instructor.

CHIN 218 - Further Studies in Modern Chinese
Literature: 1911 to the Present (3 credits):
This
course builds on Chinese 217 and deals
with literary texts of greater linguistic difficulty.
It also includes further language study
and selected readings on Chinese history,
society, and culture.
Prerequisite: Chinese
217 or permission of the instructor.

CHIN Interim trip to China (3
credits): A three-week trip to China in late May and early June will be offered every four years. The trip carries both interim and CCE credit. The next trip will be in 2011. The places visited will vary from year to year. However, students will
always have the opportunity to see some of the most famous historic, cultural,
and scenic sites in China. Previous trips have included: a two-week stay
at Beijing University, with daily lectures and field trips, and a one-week
trip to places of interest in the south of China, including Hong Kong
and Guilin; a three-week trip of the south of China, including visits
to villages in the countryside, as well as major cities and scenic places.
