Randall Bytwerk's Home Page I am a professor in the Department of Communication Arts and Sciences, located at Calvin College, which I rather immodestly believe to be the best program in communication at any liberal arts college in the United States. I've been at Calvin College since 1985. Before that, I taught at Southern Illinois University's Department of Speech Communication. My publications are in the area of propaganda and rhetoric. My latest book Landmark Speeches of National Socialism was published by Texas A & M University Press in 2008. Bending Spines: The Propagandas of Nazi Germany and the German Democratic Republic was published by Michigan State University Press. My book on Julius Streicher, the leading Nazi anti-Semite, is also available. I'm married to Sharon Van Haitsma Bytwerk, and have one child, David, who graduated from Calvin College in 2003. Our daughter Katharine died at the age of 12 in October 1996 as the result of a hiking accident in Slovakia. My major outside interests are backpacking (generally in California's Sierra Nevada) and things German. The backpacking interest developed during the three summers I worked at Tuolumne Meadows in Yosemite National Park. I got to Yosemite through the good offices of A Christian Ministry in the National Parks, an interdenominational Protestant group that arranges religious services in U.S. national parks. The German interest came from years of studying the less pleasant aspects of German history, during which I have come to appreciate and enjoy much good about Germany and the Germans. I teach a range of courses. Calvin uses the Blackboard system, which means that course material is available only to students enrolled in the courses. This is a large and growing collection of translation of German propaganda from the Nazi and East German eras. I'm on the board of the Baylor University Press series in Rhetoric and Religion. I've instituted the Moses Award, Calvin College's prize for the best practical joke of the year. Any student or staff member at Calvin is eligible for the award. For those new to the publication process, I offer the history of my "well-traveled article," an essay that got rejected by almost every journal in my field before finally finding a home.
