Overview
On October 23, 2002 Chechen separatists stormed a Moscow theatre and took 850 people hostage. Swiftly yet brutally resolved by the Russian authorities, the crisis left nearly 200 dead, including all 40 separatists. Based on interviews with Chechen exiles, this play mines the factual drama of this event to explore what lies beneath such an extreme act of violence. Through legend, history and the stories of both individuals and their families, we are ushered into the culture of a people who inhabit one of the most rugged, yet most fought-over regions on earth.
