Polly Teale’s adaptation, made in 1998 for the London theatre company, Shared Experience, dramatically shows why.

It is more than just a transfer of the book to stage. Following the ground-breaking critical book, The Madwoman in the Attic, it presents Rocherester’s first wife, Bertha, as the passionate alter ego of Jane herself. The result is a powerful and original work of theatre which, through the startling imagery and intense action, recreates the interior life of one of the most beloved of all novels.”
