Overview
Tiger at the Gates was written by Jean Giraudoux, one of France’s greatest twentieth century playwrights. This exceptionally moving, yet biting comedy is set in Troy – a city doomed by lust, betrayal and a thirst for war. The main character is Hector, the city’s greatest general, who knows all too well the horror and cruelty of war. In the play, he struggles to preserve peace in the face of the patriotic fervor, xenophobic sentiment and mob madness. He must debate with love-sick politicians and a citizenry ensnared by their adoration of Helen, who would rather go to war than give up the beauty in their midst. Calvin’s production, like Giraudoux’s script, sets the tale not in ancient Troy, but in the twentieth century. Come and join the debate about beauty, war, government, and love.
