Wuthering Heights
Written by Emily Brontë
Adapted by Charles Vance
Directed by Robert Hubbard
Assistant Director: Jessie Glover
In the Gezon Auditorium
On Nov. 2-4, 9-11
Overview
Its central characters, Catherine and Heathcliff, exhibit little in the way of inherent goodness or loving kindness; rather, they repeatedly reveal practiced aptitude for cruelty, deceitfulness, and revenge. C.S. Lewis once said that the greatness of an institution is romantic love. They epitomize its fallen state and ultimate corruption. But in representing behaviors illustrative of the fallen nature of humanity, Bronte by no means endorses these behaviors. Far from it, Wuthering Heights functions as a morality play. It persuasively testifies against the temptation of personal betrayal, the myth of material success, and most importantly, the allure of revenge. In the end, Heathcliff and Catherine’s power to control and destroy their lives and the lives of those around them eventually surrenders to the more powerful and eternal forces of grace, justice, and rebirth. Darkness gives way to the light.
