Overview
This Pulitzer Prize-winning play by one of America’s finest playwrights is regarded as one of the great plays of our century. It has been translated into many languages and produced around the world. The story of A Streetcar Named desire is simple; its themes are complex. Blanche DuBois, a Southern belle who has suffered the loss of her ancestral home, arrives in New Orleans to visit her sister Stella, who is married to a crude and forceful man, Stanley Kowalski. Blanche’s airs, her affections and illusions about herself and others, her lies about her tragic and sordid past are ruthlessly exposed by Stanley. Blanche suffers a complete breakdown and is led away to an asylum. In ths play Williams illustrates the painful conflict between humankind’s search for dignity and recognition and the frailty and brutality of human life. A man of broad sensitivity and sympathies, Williams experienced loneliness and loss which made him responsive to the suffering of others. A Streetcar Named Desire is, at its heart, a plea for compassion.
