Lesson and Class Descriptions
 


1. GOLF: Sharpen your skills or learn the game; for the veteran or the novice. (limit 12-15 people) When: June 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Where: Christian Reformed Recreation Center, Shafer and 36th Street. Instructor: Ralph Honderd, emeritus professor of physical education

2. Yes You Can Write Music! A five day course with the goal of writing your own music—not the poetry, but the music. This course will give you a basic understanding of the principles of music composition. You may well have a hidden gift lying deep within you, just waiting to be used. (You need a background in the fundamentals of music and/or piano)
When: Friday, June 12; then Monday—Thursday, June 15-18 Where: Chapel Undercroft Choir room, 1:30 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. Instructor: Dale Grotenhuis, emeritus professor of music

3. The ABC’s of Birding: ABODE--habitat, nesting; BEHAVIOR--migration, flocking, courtship; CHOW--foods of preference, techniques of getting food. Discuss the ABC’s of birding and how each part aids in the identification of birds. Includes bird walks and bird watching. Class discussion. All levels of experience are welcome. When: June 15, 16, 17, 18 from 8:00 a. m. to 10:00 a.m. (note time change) Where: DeVos Communication Center room #150 Instructor: Bette Frieswyk, veteran birder

4. Computers for Advanced Beginners: This class will cover some helpful tips for word-processing (shortcuts, adding pictures, label, etc.), using Excel to keep track of your finances, questions on e-mail and finding information on the internet. If you want to cover something specific, e-mail Jeni at hoekstradj@sbcglobal.net (limit of 12-15 people) When: June 15 – 18 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. in North Hall #180. 5. Frugal FUNdamentals: Ever yearn for the pre-tech days when we, as children or with our children, made our own fun with stuff lying around the house or in the trash? Afraid your grandkids are missing out on this kind of home-made fun? In this class we’ll make flip books from index cards, “things” from spool-knitted tubes, and more projects with sponges and scrubbies. Share your own ideas too. Materials will be provided at cost. When: Only 2 days, June 15 and 16 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Where: DeVos Communication Center room 160. Instructor: Rosemary Stevenson, artist, craftsperson, playground monitor

6. Line Dancing: Let old “Twinkle-toes” Settergren teach you to know your left foot from your right. No previous experience needed. Come and have some fun! When: June 15 – 18 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:45 p.m., Lab Theatre, near the Gezon Auditorium Instructor: Robert Settergren, retired engineer, architect, and computer expert

7. The American Revolution: A fresh look at the events that forever changed our world! What led to the revolt? Who were the actors in the drama? What were the major battles, their effects and the aftermath? Find out what you didn’t know or have long forgotten. When:June 15–18 from 1:30 p.m to 2:45 p.m. in Hiemenga Hall 331 Instructor: William Huizing Jr., retired middle-school teacher and Revolutionary War buff who has a personal library of 150 books on the era.

8. The Book of Colossians: The epistle to the Colossians is a powerful presentation of the Fullness of Life that believers have in Christ, who is the Head of Creation and the Church. Sections of the three chapters of Colossians will be the center of our study and discussion. It is recommended that you read the epistle a number of times in preparation for the class. When:June 15–18 from 3:15 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Hiemenga Hall 331 Instructor: Andrew Bandstra, emeritus professor of the New Testament

These lessons and classes are planned and supported by the CALL Summer Programs Committee.  Although geared to the interests of older learners, you do NOT need to be a CALL member to participate in the summer programs.
