Travel to South Africa
November 2 - 17, 2012 [click to view trip PDF]

Travel to South Africa with John Apol, CALL member, Calvin College alumnus and a frequent traveler to South Africa, including four Calvin student interim groups.  Visit a land of many races, cultures and languages with incredible diversity in geography.  This trip will include learning about the massive political changes that occurred with the end of “apartheid” in the early 90s, a change from government by minority to government by majority, and discovering the challenges still facing this country.  This will be accomplished by meeting with South African leaders and villagers as well as visiting museums and other sites.  The cities of Cape Town and Johannesburg will be visited as well as townships and remote villages.  As we travel from place to place we will view the country’s diverse landscape, including the “highveld” and “lowveld”, seacoast, mountains and plateaus, and unusual flora such as the “fynbos” of the cape region.  In the Cape Town area, “must see” excursions include taking the boat trip to Robben Island, Nelson Mandela’s prison home for many years; going to the top of Table Mountain via cable car for magnificent views; and driving down to the Cape of Good Hope, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Indian Ocean.  This trip will be 16 days in duration, including two travel days.  Note: tour will originate in Grand Rapids
and arrangements will be made for you to fly from your home city to meet us for the overseas flight.
