Grand Rapids Opera

invites CALL members to experience the magic of opera through the
following exclusive member opportunities. The proposed program provides members with
an in-depth, behind-the-scenes opera experience, taking them on a journey from
composition to the final staged production.

May 4 & 5  |  7:30 PM  |  DeVos Performance Hall

OPERA  |  CLASSIC  |  COMEDY  |  ITALIAN

The quintessential comic opera

On June 2, 1967, West Michigan audiences were given their first opera. Now, 50 years and 128 operas later, Opera Grand Rapids returns to its beginnings with the same rousing, tuneful comedy.

Featuring Mozart at the height of his creative genius, in what many consider to be the greatest opera of all time, is a tangled tale of farce and folly ending, at last, in love. Below its madcap surface, an age-old wisdom is revealed: wealth and power are no match for ingenuity and authenticity. Musically sophisticated, yet catchy; screwball, yet poignant; this opera sparkles with genius from overture to finale.

Performance Bicycle Partnership

See this link for the discount form to print. Be sure to have your CALL membership card and id# for the 30% discount on bikes.

As previously announced, though with little fanfare, CALL now cooperates with Philadelphia’s Advanced Sports International to promote bicycling as a leisure and health activity.  The chief benefit of this relationship is a standard 30% discount from MSRP on bicycles by three distinguished, innovative, and value-conscious brands--Fuji, Kestrel, and Breezer.  Together they make virtually every kind of bicycle from varieties of “leisure” bikes to mountain bikes, track bikes, and tour bikes (one of Fuji’s sponsored riders just won the Australian National Women’s Championship).  You can browse catalogs on-line and purchase on the website of Performance Bike, the chief retailer of these brands (a 100+ stores in 20 states), Performancebike.com.  The purchase will be delivered to the address of choice. See the link to the flyer above, though the expiration date on the offer is mistaken; the arrangement will continue indefinitely.  Direct any questions you might have to anker@calvin.edu

At any age, physical exercise of any kind provides significant health benefits of various kinds.  For the aging in particular, including something so simple as a good walk, or simply a number of short walks, provides marked benefits in physical strength, agility, endurance, and resilience.  And as researches are now discovering, there are also for multiple reasons definite benefits in mental acuity.  And even slight exercise, especially out of doors, has marked impact on mood and general emotional well-being.  In short, far from only benefiting physical well-being, new research shows the fruits are remarkably holistic. .

A second component of this bicycling initiative will regularly provide through the CALL newsletter and website the following:
1. Practical and reliable information on cycling in general, focusing on fitness benefits for the aging,
2. Safe practices in riding, from attire to bike “fit.”
3. Information on bicycling resources,
4. And where to ride (and walk) comfortably and safely in the Grand Rapids area, locating initially from the Calvin College campus and from there radiating outward to the region.
