Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) is an IRS program designed to help low income tax payers file their tax forms. In many cases these people are entitled to a refund even if they do not have a tax liability. The tax assistance is given at different sites in the Grand Rapids area, such as Baxter Community Center and United Church Outreach Ministry. Calvin students have volunteered for this program for over 20 years.
Training
We have a training session for students who wish to participate in this helpful program. In addition, there is some on-the-job training at the locations where assistance is provided. Although many students involved in this program are accounting majors, all are welcome.
When
Training is usually given in early February of each year. Assistance is provided from February through the middle of April.
Why
Students help the community by getting tax refunds into the hands of people who are entitled to them and need it very badly. In 2001, VITA volunteers processed approximately $100,000 in refunds for clients. Students benefit individually by using their gifts to help others and gaining valuable practical experience.
