Minor Curriculum

The minor in Asian Studies consists of 6 courses, 3 required and 3 elective. The Semester in China (STCH 203 and 204) may substitute for Hist 245 or 246 and Phil 225. Courses taken at the Japan Center for Michigan Universities (JCMU) may substitute for required and/or elective courses. No more than one interim course is allowed for the minor.

1. Three required courses as follows:

  • History 245 or 246 East Asia to 1800, East Asia since 1800
  • Philosophy 225 Chinese Thought & Culture
  • Religion 255 World Religions

2. Three elective courses from the following list:

  • Political Science 277 Asian Politics
  • Art 241 Asian art
  • Chinese 101-218 Chinese language courses
  • Japanese 101-218 Japanese language courses
  • History 235 Early India
  • History 236 Modern India
  • History 245 East Asia to 1800
  • History 246 East Asia since 1800
  • History 272 The Contemporary World (when on Korean War or other Asian topic)
  • History 346 Modern Chinaa
  • History 371 Asia and the Pacific Since 1850
  • Interim courses In Asia or on Asian topics
  • STCH 210 Emerging China
  • JCMU courses (as approved by Asian Studies director or committee)

Additional courses, from departments other than those listed above, may be added to the Asian Studies minor after approval by the Ad Hoc Committee for the Asian Studies Minor.
