Japanese language major

The Japanese language major is offered by Hubers Asian studies program and consists of 12 courses.

Graduation requirements

To graduate with an Japanese major you must take a minimum of eight Japanese language courses and four culture courses, with at least one of the latter at the 300 level.

  • East Asia (History 245 or 246 or 346)
  • World Religions (Religion 255 or 355)
  • Philosophy (225)
  • one 300 level cultural elective (Art 241; Economics 237, when on Asia; Political Science 277;
    History 245, 246, 272, 346, 371; Religion 355)
  • eight Japanese language courses (101/102, 201/202, 301/302, 311/312)

Off-campus programs

During both fall and spring semesters students may participate in a semester program of intensive Japanese language study at the Japan Center for Michigan Universities (JCMU) in Hikone, Japan. Language courses are taught at all levels. Cultural engagement includes field trips, home stays in the community and participation in local cultural events. The Center is run in cooperation with the University of Michigan, Michigan State University and other MIchigan colleges and universities.
