| Preparing yourself for a career in
architecture Visit at least one architectural firm such as Progressive AE. Steve Fridsma is a Calvin alumni working at ProgressAE. Engineering 103 is taught by practicing architects and the class visits at least one firm. Consult the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) website. Join the Calvin College chapter of the American Institute of Architecture Students for engagement with other students interested in architecture. Meet architects. Tour a school of architecture. Avail yourself of many other architectural learning experiences. Work in a construction or construction-related field during summer or during your undergraduate experience. Work part-time in a firm or for a year after baccalaureate degree. Work on a service project with the Grand Rapids based Inner City Christian Federation, Habitat for Humanity, or other hands-on-experience. Travel experience is valued, especially abroad. You might go abroad for an interim or for a semester abroad. Include one or two sketches in your portfolio. With advice from your advisor, narrow areas of personal interest, and select schools suited to your needs. Check websites of architecture schools. If their catalog is not available on-line, request a hard copy of catalogs from all schools under consideration. Recommend applying to three to six schools: One to two highly competitive; One to two competitive; One to two open admission schools. Visit schools and talk to students and recent graduates. Prepare portfolios giving evidence that you SEE & COMMUNICATE IMAGINATIVELY! Target each portfolio to each selected school and convey a sense of your goals and personality. 10 to 20 examples thoughtfully organized of breadth and depth of knowledge and abilities. Interests in economic areas, human social concerns, and symbolic and aesthetic imagery types: Freehand drawing, photography communication design painting, sculpture, etc. drafting examples, etc. creative work is preferred over drafting. |
