* S, odd years. A historical study of the form and function of visual
images
in the Early Christian and the Byzantine traditions. Special attention
will be given to the rise of the cult of
saints, to the
veneration and destruction of
religious icons, and to the relationship between sacred
images and the imperial court. Slide
lectures and class discussions; a research paper
is required. Prerequisite: Sophomore standing
or above.
