The primary mission of the African and African Diaspora Studies (AADS) minor at Calvin College is to provide a liberal arts focused curriculum that will assist students in fulfilling the stated goals of the college as an institution of higher education rooted in the Reformed tradition of Christianity. To this end, the program will prepare Calvin students, its wider constituency, and community to understand Africa’s role in the formation of the Americas and the continent’s role in geo-politics and culture. Students graduating with a minor in AADS will have a clear understanding of Africa and people of African descent through the study of geography, history, literature philosophy, political science, sociology and the foreign languages. Service-learning is a vital component within the AADS program. We expect students to complete courses with a service learning component. The end of this study will contribute to students being better prepared to be servant-leaders both locally and globally.
