As I've written and maintained my reviews of movies and books and other media, as I've received feedback on these reviews, I realized something: no one knows that I think I'm an idiot---at least with respect to these reviews.
I'm not a trained journalist. I'm not a trained critic. So please, for everyone's sanity, don't take my reviews too seriously. If you like them, great; if you think they stink, so do I---except for a few rare ones where I think I've actually had something interesting to say.
I write the reviews so that I don't lose the ability to write. I write the reviews so that I can put my database and interface programming skills to the test. I probably spend more time polishing the code to process my reviews than I spend writing the reviews themselves. The reviews themselves have a very low priority. In fact, I've branched out from reviewing just books and movies because I wrote some really cool code (if I say so myself) that made it quite easy to branch out like this.
I say all of this mostly for myself so that I don't feel quite so bad about writing poor quality reviews. But it's also important to me that anyone who reads these reviews have only themselves to blame if they don't like what or how I say.
That being said, I do appreciate constructive criticism, and my apologies if you never hear back from me. I've changed a few reviews in response to some good criticism. But if you want to call me an idiot, I've already beaten you to the punch, and I'll just delete your email.
