The Movie Tastes of Jeremy D. Frens
My movie tastes are a little more varied than my reading (as far
as fiction goes). While I typically do not read that much general
fiction, I do enjoy drama films quite a bit.
Important Criteria
There are a few things that I look for in a movie. The more of
these things that a movie does right, the better off they are.
- Storytelling
- This includes not only picking out an interesting story, but
also the way the story is told. Some movies, like Pulp
Fiction and The Virgin Suicides, use unusually
storytelling techniques which appeal greatly to me. But other, more
linear films, like Amadeus or Five Easy Pieces, are
good as well because they have good stories.
- Cinematography
- I am fascinated with the way a film is framed and the camera
angels used in the film. This is why I hold directors like David
Lynch, Stanley Kubrich, Barry Sonnenfeld, Steven Sodenberg, and (of
course) Hitchcock is such high regard. These directors usually tell
a good story in an interesting way, plus they have such interesting
eyes for telling that story.
- Characters
- Perhaps this is included with storytelling, but the characters
have to be convincing. It's important for me to note here that the
actors' performances do not necessarily have to be convincing for
me. For a long while I perfectly immune to bad acting, but it can
bother me now. It's not an important criteria for me.
- Content
- Before I knew better, I thought that I would try to see every
movie that I could. Even if I knew the movie was bad, I'd watch it
anyway so that I could appreciate the good ones that much more. Now
I know better (thanks in good part to Mystery Science Theater
3000). However, I just based on quality, not necessarily
subject material. Pulp Fiction is one of my favorite movies
despite the violence and graphic language. For some people I know
who might read my reviews, keep in mind that I'm not particularly
keyed in on offensive material, and so I probably will not warn you
away from it. For the most part, any content is fine as long as it
is warranted and justified for the story.
